Swimming at Mission Bay

I got my first swimming fix of our trip today. It was perfect weather and we took the bus out to Mission Bay, the closest sandy beach to where we’re staying. It was busy but not heaving with everyone enjoying barbecues and family games once they’d had their dip in the sea.

Of course Mission BayI couldn’t persuade Paul to join me for a swim… He was more inteThe De Fontein Bar in Mission Bayrested in finding somewhere nice to eat later. We found a bar called De Fontein with speciality Belgium beers and lovely views over the harbour.

Namo Restaurant Ponsonby

Namo Restaurant

I have started to notice that second only to Thai Restaurants in their profusion are Japanese Restaurants. In Ponsonby Road there is a Suchi Bar/ Café and also a Ramen café.

On Monday evening we came across the latest addition; a new Japanese Restaurant called Namo The food is very good: fresh, creative and beautifully presented. The chef is Japanese and at one time worked at Nobu in London. The wine list has also been well selected. They are just having a few teething problems ensuring that everyone at a table is served at the same time… Well worth a visit!

Karma Snort

What is Karma Snort you may ask? Well its just another example of quirky NZ branding.

Karma Snort are a group of New Zealand comedians.. at last count up to 14 of them. They were appearing on stage at a late night performance at the Q Theatre; at the top of Queens Street, Central Auckland. It was a nine thirty (ish) start for about an hour. They had a couple of special guests and improvised comic routines based around random words suggested by the audience. They were pretty good actually. Val was even given a pack of Karma Cola (no additives – all natural and organic .. I think!)

Before the show we visited an interesting little Japanese sake bar. It was called Tanuki.. the one next door called Tanuki’s Cave was trendier, with lots of youngsters.. but the waiting time was 20  minutes.  We snacked on Sashimi, Edeme green soya beans, broccoli with sesame mayonnaise, Prawn Tempura and Vegetable Suchi. Swilled down with a little medium sweet saki…
