‘It’s always raining in the UK!’ people say to us. Mmm… Auckland is definitely in competition! We’ve had over 50mm of rain – and that was just today! In these first 10 days of February we’ve had more rain than London gets all winter!

Ah yes, we can get the odd drop. First there’s the volume (depth) thing. Auckland does depth very well, Christchurch not so much, around 600mm/yr over an average of 7 days in a month (Auckland around 10). But it is all very variable making for a great talking point about which we can yarn at very great length and get extremely defensive – us southerners are more defensive about temperature, widely diverting attention to more rain in the north!
The best thing to do if it does rain (but it really only rains at night), is find one of those cafes that serves coffee all day long.

No worries … our house swapper has a classy coffee machine that makes all the right noises(!)
