Christchurch Cathedral today…

‘This is the first time I’ve been back here,’ the person beside me was saying to her friend, ‘since that day when everything was falling in all around me… It’s really freaking me out…’

We were looking through metal cordons and mesh at the derelict Christchurch Cathedral in front of us. Such a brutal image in the heart of the city;  a full seven years after that most devastating earthquake.

However, in the last few months – after years of debate – a decision has been taken to restore the cathedral to ‘its former glory’. Many are unsure if this it the right way forward and many fear mounting costs, but I think most people are relieved  that all the uncertainty is over at least.
